Let’s face it; sustainability is an issue that won’t go away… Whether its watching the world news, reading about local water restrictions or noticing the ‘please recycle’ logo on your coffee cup, in almost everything we do we are all asked to consider the effect that our environmental footprint will have on future generations to come.

In this issue, we’re featuring a range of environmentally conscious businesses and programmes that have put considerable thought into how their actions can help the environment and how they are leading the way in making the caravanning lifestyle a little cleaner and greener.

Green Programs:

CRVA Accreditation

CRVA Accreditation is a national program which works to sustain and improve the high standard of business practices across the Caravan/Holiday Park Industry. It is designed to ensure that travelers who visit an accredited Caravan/Holiday Park receive top notch service and gain access to high quality facilities.

The yellow Accreditation Tick also means that the park abides by strict environmental management practices. A range of environmentally conscious criteria must be met before a Caravan/Holiday Park can become accredited. Effective waste management and recycling practices are required along with measures to protect the natural environment against visitor damage, which may take the form of signage, barriers, defined pathways and boardwalks.

These are only a few examples of how CRVA’s Accreditation program effectively ensures a greener future for all travellers, regardless of whether they visit Australia’s natural beauty in 1 year or 100 years from now. When choosing your next holiday accommodation look out for the Accreditation logo, because it is also up to you, the traveler, to let businesses know that you want a cleaner future.

Green Holiday Parks:

Brisbane Holiday Village

The Brisbane Holiday Village has worked hard to ensure that the water, which currently resides in our dams, lasts well beyond the next rainfall.

Geoff Illich, General Manager of Brisbane Holiday Village, has revamped his holiday park’s water usage processes. From toilets and taps to washing machines and upgraded heating systems, this park has spared no expense in becoming an environmentally friendly business. While the work so far has dramatically reduced water consumption per visitor, there are further plans to continue improving water conservation practices including upgrading dual flush toilets so they use 1.5 L less water per half-flush.

When visiting Brisbane Holiday Village expect to find a huge range of facilities to enjoy throughout your stay including a water park, pool, mini golf course, tennis court, and café. That’s luxury living with the peace of mind of a green future.

Lane Cove River Tourist Park - Sydney

Take a peek into the future of holiday parks at Lane Cove River Tourist Park. Every dollar spent in the Park goes directly towards maintaining the area’s precious environment and perpetuating their carbon neutral footprint. In respect to the business’s unprecedented efforts in conservation they have received enough awards and certifications to fill at least two whole proverbial ‘pool rooms’.

The bushlands and eucalypt forests of Lane Cove National Park abound with native birds, bandicoots, tawny frogmouths and lace monitor lizards. Park visitors stay close to nature in fully serviced cabins or their own caravans, campervans and tents. Here you can develop a better environmental and cultural understanding of the true value of conservation.

Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park

Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park recently received the NSW Department of Lands Environmental Excellence Award in recognition of the park’s outstanding efforts in upholding the highest conservational standards.

Sydney Lakeside took the initiative to install waterless urinals, rain water tanks, reduced flow shower heads and has put plans in place to capture stormwater from neighboring suburbs. School children are often welcomed into the park to learn more about the local flora and fauna and ways in which they can contribute to maintaining our country’s beautiful natural environment. For their efforts the park also recieved the BIG4 award "Supreme Award for Excellence".

SIDETRACKS

The team at We Love This Country Team has collected plenty of travel notes on our travels around Australia.

FORBES, NSW

Where is it?
387 km west of Sydney
(See it on Google Map)

Why go?
The small town of Forbes possesses an enchanting blend of modern day living mixed with a rich foundation of historical intrigue. Boutique shops adorn wide country roads, art and culture gain inspiration from legends of the past and local dining takes on distinctive regional flavours. The town is also a good central point to explore New South Wales’ regional area, including Orange, Dubbo and the Japanese Gardens at Cowra. It is no wonder that many people are packing up city life and making a tree-change to Forbes.

Things to do & see:

  1. Take a packed lunch to the beautiful expanse of Lake Forbes. The adjacent parklands is the perfect place to take a walk along the lake’s shore, a great spot for a picnic and also just a great place to unwind after a long days traveling.
  2. Take a tour of the Bushrangers Hall of Fame. Located in the historic Albion Hotel, which was partially destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1888-93, is the Bushrangers Hall of Fame. Enlargements of photos and a collection of memorabilia paint a vivid picture of an old, yet culturally crucial, moment in time.
  3. South of Forbes is a bird sanctuary. The varied native wildlife provides plenty of photographic moments for both avid birdwatchers and visitors just wanting a quiet day close to nature.

Local favourites:

  • Aquatic sports can be enjoyed across Lake Forbes. There is an Aquitic Centre 2 km from town where locals commonly waterski. The facility has 2.5 km of waterway with a boat-launching ramp, carpark, toilets and showers.

Did you know?
Forbes is home to one of Australia’s most famous bushrangers, Ben Hall, who lived and died in the area. His grave can be viewed at Forbes Cemetary. Nearby is the grave of Ned Kelly’s sister Kate, who married here in 1888 and drowned in the Lachlan in 1898.

BUSSELTON, WA:

Where is it?
229 km south of Perth
(See it on Google Map)

Why go?
Beach holidays can often be pigeonholed into retreats that involve thongs, fish and chips, loud kids and sticky sand. While this mode of holiday forms the cornerstone of many of our fondest childhood memories, and probably continues to create many fond moments throughout our adult lives, some of us might just want to sample a seaside retreat that reflects peace, quiet and a different - some might even go as far to say classier - style.

Well, go no further than Busselton; Historic buildings, green parks, sophisticated shopping, and a great range of dining and entertainment spots all set against a beautiful seaside landscape.

Things to do & see:

  1. Take a long, cool stroll along the Buselton Jetty. The jetty, which was completed in 1865, stretches 2km out to sea – an age old wooden boardwalk that hovers over swaying blue water. The perfect place to do some fishing, breath the ocean air and escape the surrounds of solid land.
  2. The Old Butter Factory Museum calls to those who are historically inclined. The rooms are still known by their butter factory names - 'The Churn Room', 'The Cream Holding Room', 'The Cream Tipping and Washing Room' but the museum's displays are a comprehensive history of the local area.
  3. The water around Busselton is sheltered from the ocean winds, which provides the calm conditions that are best for snorkeling and scuba diving. Busselton Jetty, Eagle Bay, Meelup and Castle Rock are favourites for underwater exploration.

Local favourites:

  • Busselton has become a popular hub for gourmet food. Highly skilled chefs and winemakers have been attracted to the region by a wide variety of top quality local produce. So make sure you join the locals in experiencing what Busselton brings to the table.
  • Busselton also has a bustling arts and craft scene. Original artworks and finely crafted furniture are just some of the jewels you are sure to find with a little local exploration.

Did you know?
Before Europeans officially settled in Australia, a solitary sailor, who the captain assumed drowned whilst sailing ashore, was left behind near Busselton by a French expedition in 1801. When the area was finally settled there was a story told by the local Aborigines of a white man who had lived with the Indigenous tribe, often wandering the shores on lookout for returning ships.

BYRON/BALLINA, NSW:

Where is it?
190 km South of Brisbane with the new Jurgen Bypass making it only a 2 hours trip
(See it on Google Map)

Why go?
Ballina and Byron are two picturesque seaside towns that appeal to a wide range of holidaymakers. Byron Bay, which was previously only known to only accommodate alternative type lifestyles, has slowly transformed into an up market holiday destination which is enjoyed by famous personalities, alternative locals, city slickers who have made a sea change and... potentially you!

The two towns boast a wide variety of holiday activities and are rich in local culture and history. We advise you take more than a pit stop to soak up these beautiful locations.

Things to do & see:

  2. For those who wake up feeling extraordinarily adventurous, Byron Bay offers hot air ballooning over the local region and the hinterland. A truly spectacular experience that can be shared with Chris Dewhurst, the first person to fly a hot air balloon over Mount Everest.
