਍ഀ

Towing their 15 foot pop-top caravan from their home in Silvan, Victoria all the way along Australia’s east coast in 2006 covering 21,081 kilometres over 101 days, to rugged explorations of the Top End and WA in 2008 covering 15,288 kilometres over 82 days, the Reed’s have seen a lot of Australia.

਍ഀ

Over the years they have learnt a thing or two about what makes a successful road trip and normally spend 6 - 9 months planning before each big adventure.

਍ഀ

Here are Rob and Sandra’s tips for a bon voyage

਍ഀ

Before You Go

਍ഀ
    ਍ഀ
  • Ask your neighbours to remove all the junk mail from your letterbox, collect any deliveries and generally keep an eye on your house while you are away;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Set timers in the house to control the lights, TV set and radios, so the house will seem occupied even while you are away;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Contact your local Post Office to have your mail either held or redirected;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Authorise a trusted family member to access your bank account, credit card or cheque book to receive and pay your bills while you are away;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Check the Australian Bureau of Meteorology website for long range weather forecasts;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Pack enough clothing for changes in the weather, particularly if you’re going to be away for some months;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Check where the service stations are along the way to allow for fuel stops.
  • ਍ഀ
਍ഀ

On the Road

਍ഀ
    ਍ഀ
  • When working out places you’d like to visit, make sure and leave enough time to do and see everything you want, like buying souvenirs, having lunch etc. Don’t rush yourself;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Allow for day trips without the caravan, like river cruises, light plane flights or rail journeys;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Get to know the locals and pick their brains for local knowledge like emergency contacts for doctors, hospitals and vets, or recommended places to visit and what road conditions are like.
  • ਍ഀ
਍ഀ

Health Advice

਍ഀ
    ਍ഀ
  • If you take any regular medication or have any allergies then discuss your needs with your doctor before you leave. You should take enough medication to last you for the duration of your trip or ask for enough repeat prescriptions to cover you while you’re in remote areas;
  • ਍ഀ
  • If you have any special dietary needs, source and contact supermarkets along the way to make sure they stock the foods you require and include those supermarket stops in your itinerary;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Take two first aids kit - one for the car and one for the caravan and make sure they are fully equipped.
  • ਍ഀ
਍ഀ

Pet Advice

਍ഀ
    ਍ഀ
  • If travelling with a pet, speak to your local vet about vaccinations before you go. Discuss what to do about insect bites and find out how to identify ticks on your dog and what symptoms to be aware of. Take worming tablets and flea control drops as well;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with your name and mobile phone number;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Keep your pet inside at night in remote areas as wild animals may be in the area.
  • ਍ഀ
਍ഀ

Mechanical Emergencies – take the following:

਍ഀ
    ਍ഀ
  • A repair kit;
  • ਍ഀ
  • A spare pair of wheel bearings for the van or springs for an older van;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Extra hose connections;
  • ਍ഀ
  • A spare piece of Perspex, cut to fit, in case a stone breaks a window;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Spare belts and hoses for the car motor – when you get the car serviced keep the old ones and they may get you out of trouble;
  • ਍ഀ
  • Silicone;
  • ਍ഀ
  • 12 volt drill kit;
  • ਍ഀ
  • A tube of quick steel or something similar in case you puncture a petrol tank or even your motor.
  • ਍ഀ

਍ഀ BOWEN, QLD

਍ഀ

Where is it?
਍ഀ Northern region of the Whitsundays, 200km south of Townsville
਍ഀ (See it on Google Map)

਍ഀ

Why go?

਍ഀ

Bowen is a beautiful coastal town nestled within the Whitsundays region that offers the finest in leisure activities. Bush meets beaches that stretch the length of the town and beyond, providing snorkelling, diving, fishing and sailing to those interested in a sea change. Other perfect holiday options include a round of golf or a day trip visiting Bowen's intriguing array of historical landmarks.
਍ഀ

਍ഀ

Things to do & see:

਍ഀ
    ਍ഀ
  1. Get back to nature by traversing one of Bowen's picturesque bushwalks਍ഀ . Well-maintained parks and walkways wind through the native Australian bushland. ਍ഀ The walks are well marked and will take you through terrain complimented by granite outcrops and stunning views over the Whitsunday Islands.
  2. ਍ഀ
  3. Have a picnic at Mullers Lagoon, one of Bowen's most beautiful spots. Mullers Lagoon is 23.57 hectares of picturesque parkland in the centre of town, which has been turned into a superb botanical gardens and wetlands habitat. The picnic area which provides free BBQ's creates a relaxing place to eat, sit back and watch the feathered residents that call this lagoon home.
  4. ਍ഀ
  5. Bowen has some of the best fringing coral literally metres off their beaches, which makes for perfect conditions for snorkeling and/or diving. Nearby bays and islands also offer some spectacular reef to explore. It's a fantastic place for the children to learn how to snorkel.
    ਍ഀ
    ਍ഀ
  6. ਍ഀ
਍ഀ

Local favourites:

਍ഀ
    ਍ഀ
  • The locals are lucky enough to have a 9 hole beachfront golf course on Queens Bay. Visitors are welcome to join in the fun. The clubhouse is equipped with a specialty store, bar and restaurant.
  • ਍ഀ
  • Fishing is one of Bowen's biggest attractions. You can throw in a line from a beach, at a creek, off some rocks or the end of the jetty at Front Beach. If its deeper water you are after, local fishing charters can take you where the big fish are.
  • ਍ഀ
  • Visit the BIG mango which represents the delicious fruit which carries the name sake of the town “Bowen Mango”.
  • ਍ഀ
਍ഀ

Did you know?
਍ഀ The slab cottage beside the Bowen Historical Museum was first built in 1872. The cottage was dismantled at its original site and brought into town slab by slab, re-erected and restored. Period furniture and fittings were painstakingly collected to furnish the building.

For over three decades, BIG4 Holiday Parks have been dedicated to the spirit of the True Blue Aussie Holiday; celebrating the Great Outdoors, cricket on the beach, making new friends around the barbie, and nights spent under millions of shining stars.  That is what BIG4 believe holidays should be about, a chance to relax, to take a step back and remember what's important.

਍ഀ

From humble beginnings in 1979, with four dedicated caravan park owners in Ballarat Victoria, BIG4 has grown to over 180 parks, all around Australia. Over that time, they've worked hard to create an atmosphere where everyone can enjoy themselves, amidst a real sense of community.  At a BIG4 Holiday Park, it's up to you whether or not you want to join in the fun, or find yourself a quiet corner away from the world, where you can just kick back and soak up the serenity.

਍ഀ

That's the beauty of a BIG4 holiday.  No matter what you're looking to do, they can help you find your own uniquely Australian holiday experience.  BIG4 park owners and operators are always there with a warm friendly welcome and always ready to assist you with a wealth of local information.

਍ഀ

If you are looking for an accommodation experience that has got it all – BIG4 Holiday Parks are just the answer. At over 180 locations across Australia, whether you are looking for a city stay, seaside escape, country retreat, farm stay, overnight stay, family holiday or touring holiday – BIG4 offers a unique holiday experience.
